Huge fireball likely large meteor that may have left debris

A fiery ball of light witnessed by thousands as it swept over the upper Midwest Wednesday night was almost certainly a large meteor that probably left a trail of debris across southern Wisconsin, asteroid experts say.

The path of the meteor was tracked by Doppler radar at two National Weather Service stations, in the Quad Cities and at LaCrosse, Wis.

“It has the appearance that is completely consistent with being a bright meteor,” said Mark Hammergren, an Adler Planetarium astronomer who specializes in asteroids, after viewing the Doppler images.

The object, which lit up the sky shortly after 10 p.m. Wednesday across parts of Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin, was very likely a piece of an asteroid, a rocky planetoid formation that orbits the sun, he said. Almost all meteors come from asteroids.

It almost certainly was not from debris trailing a comet or part of a meteor shower associated with a comet, as earlier reports have speculated, Hammergren said.

“We won’t know for sure until we get specimens” of whatever the object was, if pieces of it survived the fiery plunge through the Earth’s atmosphere, he said. But it was so large, he said he was fairly certain some may be found. Technically, if pieces of a meteor survive the impact, they are known as “meteorites.”

There was no “space junk” satellite debris that would have de-orbited into the atmosphere over that part of the U.S. Wednesday night, said William Ailor, director of the Center for Orbital and Reentry Debris Studies at the Aerospace Corporation in California, ruling out that it could have been a piece of an old satellite.

According to the weather service’s Milwaukee office, officials there, in LaCrosse, Wis., Davenport and Des Moines, Iowa, and in St. Louis and Kansas City, Mo. received “numerous reports of a fireball” about the same time people began contacting Milwaukee area officials about the flare.

National Weather Service radar in LaCrosse, Wis. showed the object at between 6,000 and 12,000 feet, heading from northwest to southeast over Grant and Iowa counties.

(The University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences has a series of time lapse photos of the event as seen from Madison; an Iowa sheriff’s department captured video of the flash that’s been posted on YouTube.)

Christine McMorris was in her Woodstock home Wednesday evening looking out of her kitchen window as she washed dishes and talked with a friend when she noticed a bright light coming from the sky.

“All of a sudden out of the corner of my eye, I saw this huge ball of fire and a huge light,” said McMorris. “I was like, what the hell was that?”

She had seen many shooting stars during her travels to the western United States. But last night put those to shame, she said.

“They are minuscule compared to this, it was enormous,” she said.

She said as the meteor traveled closer to the surface, its intensity diminished until she lost sight of it during the approximately five to 10 seconds it took to drop. She said it didn’t have a tail.

“It was truly spectacular,” she said.

Becky Hoffman, who lives on a farm near Dixon, said she and her husband were getting ready for bed when they looked out and saw a “big glow” in the sky. She found it strange because the air was clear of storm clouds. She said she is about an hour and a half from the Wisconsin border and noticed the light north of her home.

“We thought it might have been a transformer blowing up in the area,” she said, but she dismissed it because she did not hear any explosions.

She said it was a reddish orange glow to it and she didn’t think anything of it until she turned on the radio this morning and heard that it was a meteor.

“That’s what it was, I saw it,” said Hoffman. “I thought it was pretty exciting, I just want to know where it ended up at. Did it disintegrate into the skyline or did it actually hit ground?”

In a statement on its Web site, the National Weather Service office in the Quad Cities said:
“Just after 10 pm CDT Wednesday evening April 14th, a fireball or very bright meteor was observed streaking across the sky. The fireball was seen over the northern sky, moving from west to east.

“Well before it reached the horizon, it broke up into smaller pieces and was lost from sight. The fireball was seen across Northern Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Southern Wisconsin. Several reports of a prolonged sonic boom were received from areas north of Highway 20, along with shaking of homes, trees and various other objects including wind chimes. As of late Wednesday evening, it is unknown whether any portion of this meteorite hit the ground.”

Hammergren said the apparently large size of the meteor indicates pieces may well have survived and hit the ground.

“The strength of this was comparable to others where multiple fragments have been recovered, he said, guessing that as a meteor prior to hitting and exploding in the atmosphere may have weighed “hundreds of pounds”.

Similarly sized meteors have produced meteorite fragments from the size of grains of sand to fist size and football-sized chunks.

Meteorites are so highly prized by scientists, collectors and dealers, that teams of searchers already are preparing to go to an area in southwest Wisconsin where fragments most likely would have crashed into the ground, he said.

Aliens may exist but contact would hurt humans: Stephen Hawking

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/science/space/article7107207.ece

Sun Apr 25, 6:56 pm ET

Hawking

LONDON (AFP) – Aliens may exist but mankind should avoid contact with them as the consequences could be devastating, British scientistStephen Hawking warned Sunday.

“If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans,” said the astrophysicist in a new television series, according to British media reports.

The programmes depict an imagined universe featuring alien life forms in huge spaceships on the hunt for resources after draining their own planet dry.

“Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach,” warned Hawking.

The doomsday scenario is suggested in the series “Into the Universe with Stephen Hawking” on the Discovery Channel, which began airing in the United States on Sunday.

On the probability of alien life existing, he says: “To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational.

“The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.”

Glowing squid-like creatures, herds of herbivores that can hang onto a cliff face and bright yellow predators that kill their prey with stinging tails are among the creatures that stalk the scientist’s fantastical cosmos.

Mankind has already made a number of attempts to contact extraterrestrial civilisations.

In 2008, American space agency NASA beamed the Beatles song “Across the Universe” into deep space to send a message of peace to any alien that happens to be in the region of Polaris — also known as the North Star — in 2439.

But the history of humanity’s efforts to contact aliens stretches back some years.

The US probes Pioneer 10 and 11 were launched in 1972 and 1973 bearing plaques of a naked man and woman and symbols seeking to convey the positions of the Earth and the Sun.

Voyager 1 and 2, launched in 1977, each carry a gold-plated copper phonogram disk with recordings of sounds and images on Earth.

Markets could be derailed again, warns Soros

APR 14, 2010 07:11 EDT

CLIMATE-COPENHAGEN/Railway porter-turned-billionaire financier George Soros delivered a stark warning last night that the financial world is on the wrong track and that we may be hurtling towards an even bigger boom and bust than in the credit crisis.

The man who ‘broke’ the Bank of England (and who is still able to earn a cool $3.3 bln in a year) said the same strategy of borrowing and spending that had got us out of the Asian crisis could shunt us towards another crisis unless tough lessons are learned.

Soros, who worked as a porter to pay for his studies at the London School of Economics after emigrating from Hungary, warned us to heed the lesson that modern economics had got it wrong and that markets are not inherently stable.

“The success in bailing out the system on the previous occasion led to a superbubble, except that in 2008 we used the same methods,” he told a meeting hosted by The Economist at the City of London’s modern and impressive Haberdashers’ Hall.

“Unless we learn the lessons, that markets are inherently unstable and that stability needs to the objective of public policy, we are facing a yet larger bubble.

“We have added to the leverage by replacing private credit with sovereign credit and increasing national debt by a significant amount.”

One crumb of comfort could be the 10-year period between the 1998 Asian crisis and the 2008 credit crisis. If the pattern is repeated, it should at least mean we have another 8 years to go before the next crash…

Reincarnation: I Am a Son of Myself

Reincarnation: I Am a Son of Myself

by Redburn in Spirituality, December 16, 2009

Brian Weiss tells us some truths about life and in a way you can almost melt your brain down when you see the implications of what you read.

Once you start reading Dr. Brian Weiss, you won’t stop until you finish all his books and they are seven, and that’s because what he writes is so interesting and yet so truth and gives your life a different meaning. First thing, when you die you will not go to hell nor heaven, you are not ready yet to finish your physical life or lives and you will never go to hell no matter how bad you were in a past life. The worst thing is can happen you is to live again, a very painful life where you need to pay back everything bad you did. On the other hand if you live a very good life, if you are generous, if you work hard, kill no one, you will live like a king in the next life. Dr. Weiss explains that with regressions with people with knowledge from the Masters that put that knowledge right in their minds, but when they wake up they can’t remember a thing. This is why they can access those memories, and it’s important to mention that a regression is just a memory, only when they are relaxed and with all their attention focused on remembering. Maybe this is why you cannot remember any life you already had and Dr. Brian Weiss tells that the average person lived about 100 times. Some of his patients and Catherine was one of them lived more than 80 times, Catherine is living his/her (you have no spiritual sex, souls have no sex determination) 87 th life and personally I doubt she will learn everything she has to learn just with this life.

Brian Weiss tells that with this information you should get rid from the fear of death, death it’s not what you imagine it is. Death is just the transition from one life to another.

So why are you living after all? There are any kinds of spiritual lives and in this life your mission is to learn and to become one with God though knowledge. What does it mean? What do you have to learn? The masters say you must do everything, experience everything, this also means all bad things. However this looks very vague. If, you need to experience everything you will need millions of lives and maybe there will be no planet earth for that. It’s true there are lives in other planets where you can have a physical life, however that would take millions of years but here is the funny thing, in a spiritual way there is no time, time is measured in lessons learned, not in years. Your soul doesn’t get older, just wiser and enlightened. Once you are ready you will go to God, or Allah or the Master Of Gods whatever you want to call it because no one gave it an official name.

When you become wiser you might go to a higher state or you can go back and help other people improving, Dalai Lama might be an example of someone very wise who maybe not his body but his soul might have decided to come back to help other souls to improve faster.

The only thing free you have is your free will. What you choose to do is what will make you either improve or remain stagnated in this life. Once you have nothing else to learn in this life you can move to the next one. You mustn’t however interfere with the free will of others, you might point the way but it’s their choice to follow that way or not. Think of this, you can show someone the newspaper with the job but you must NOT force that person to take that job. What she does after that it’s just her free will working and if anything bad happens to that person because she did not take the job, it’s her fault always, you have nothing to do with it and even if you forced her to take the job, she would have done something in the near future out of your reach that would put her in the same situation because even if you force someone to improve, their free will remains the same, their soul options, choices, wisdom, remains the same. If the soul doesn’t learn it will make the same mistakes that puts the soul in the same miserable state.

The most important thing to learn is the lesson of love yet some things just don’t sound right and you must read my next article about that.

Game Theory and the “Philosopher’s Dilemma”

Posted by Admin on April 23, 2010

Philosopher's Dilemma

Philosopher's Dilemma

Game theory is a product and reflection of human behaviour, not the other way around. To engage in collaborative/corruptive/collusive practices is precisely to engage in a conspiracy, which has as its precise objective to maintain the power of those in power. All that game theory does is place conspiracy theories on a mathematical basis. Why call it game theory at all? Simply by applying a neutral, mathematical label to something does not explain it away as a neutral, mathematical phenomenon. Don’t you think there are obvious, predictable, quasi-mathematical rules to describe how conspiracies are conducted? They’re not random. They’ve been tried and tested for millennia.

In a previously article, we mentioned a gameshow based on the famous philosophical problem known as the Philosopher’s Dilemma, one of the central conundrums studied by Game theory. In the gameshow, two contestants have earned a lucrative pot of money between them. At the final stage of the show each contestant has to secretly decide to “split or steal”, and the other person has no knowledge of what decision they have taken. There are three options: a) if both contestants choose to split then they each go away with a fair split of the spoils: 50-50 each b) if one wants to steal and the other wants to split then the thief takes the whole lot and the other leaves with nothing c) if both choose to steal then both get nothing.

Prior to the final decision, the two contestants have a little chat about what they intend to do. Of course, anyone planning to steal is never going to admit it, so the chat always involves both parties swearing that they will split and have absolutely no intention of stealing. But can you trust what the other person is saying?

This is a classic Game theory scenario. What decision will you take based on no sure knowledge of the other’s intentions?

Now, there are those who regard the OWO as a product of some quasi-mystical Game theory influence that mysteriously shapes our world and society, and which leaves them blameless as the authors of humanity’s misfortune. Let’s be absolutely clear about this. There would be no game if the two contestants were true to their word and split the money. There would be no game if one or both contestants didn’t have the intention of screwing over the other and stealing all the money. There would be no game if one or both contestants weren’t willing to lie through their teeth to the other to disguise their true intentions. In other words, it’s not game theory that determines human behaviour but human behaviour that determines game theory i.e. it’s the fact that some human beings are liars, cheats and thieves that creates the dilemma, the “game”.

The thieves, liars and cheats are those with a “winner takes all” mentality, exactly the same mentality that underlies capitalism and the OWO [1].

We would assume that anyone who joins The Movement would be the sort of person who would never contemplate lying to and stealing from another person i.e. game theory does not apply to The Movement – every member always chooses the “split” option, to fairly share any windfall. Imagine a society based on the values of The Movement rather than on those of the sort of people who eagerly lie, cheat and steal to secure a decisive advantage for themselves; those like the bosses of Goldman Sachs!

“We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”
Martin Luther King

In our world, the liars, cheats and thieves are the OWO. They have no compunction whatsoever about lying to us, cheating us and stealing from us. Who are the thieves of our world? They are those who have all the money, of course. Doh! How did a tiny Elite manage to commandeer an absurd proportion of the world’s wealth? Did it happen by some miraculous accident or did they relentlessly go out of their way to make it happen? Did they lie, cheat and steal at every turn to consolidate and expand their power? How else could they have come to be in a position whereby, for example, just twenty-five staggeringly greedy hedge fund managers have the same amount of wealth that could pay for thirteen million children to receive an education.

You seriously imagine that such a thing comes about randomly, through no design on the part of the Elite? What planet are you living on? How naïve can you possibly get? The whole basis of our society is that of the Elite conspiring against everyone else, with the intention of placing themselves in positions of unassailable power and wealth that they will then pass on to their children, and they to theirs, in perpetuity.

Our world is ruled by privileged family dynasties and only the most stupid people on earth could possibly conclude that the Elite have not actively conspired to make this happen, and to maintain this condition indefinitely, at the expense of all the rest of us.

Goldman Suchs, truly…

Posted by Admin on April 23, 2010

Goldman Sucks

Goldman Sucks

Something truly extraordinary has happened. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has charged Goldman Sachs, the greedy, grasping, Midas heart of the Old World Order, with fraud, prompting an immediate slump of over 12% in their share price.

For once, the victims of the evil empire of Goldman Sachs were not the ordinary people, but their own big clients, including the German bank IKB.

This is a momentous hour. Like rats in a sack, the Old World Order have viciously turned on each other. Their united front is disintegrating.

How did it come about? What did Goldman Sachs do that was so outrageous that the SEC could no longer turn a blind eye to the myriad of transactions performed by Goldman Sachs that should have attracted the most serious scrutiny long ago?

What happened was that the hedge fund Paulson & Co, one of the most spectacular beneficiaries of the Credit Crunch, earning billions of dollars while so many other were losing billions, put together a complex portfolio of subprime-mortgage-backed investments that it fully expected to slump in value i.e. it was actually assembling a collection of what it thought were the highest risk, most dubious investments available, and anticipating maximum downside on this portfolio. Its explicit strategy was to bet heavily against this portfolio i.e. to “short” it to the fullest extent. In other words, Paulson & Co regarded this portfolio as utterly toxic, a disaster in the making. This portfolio was “dead man walking” if ever there was one.

Paulson & Co arranged for Goldman Sachs to structure, market and sell this portfolio to its prestigious clients. Goldman Sachs gave it the full, glossy treatment, indicating to many clients that they would be sitting on a potential goldmine if they invested in this portfolio. They completely omitted to mention to all would-be clients that Paulson & Co regarded this portfolio as a collection of the walking dead – a zombie fund heading for the graveyard. Isn’t this a critical piece of information about which every potential client ought to have been made aware? It’s a bit like selling a house for full market value when you know it’s sitting on the edge of a crumbling cliff, a fact that you deliberately fail to tell the purchaser.

In fact, they didn’t mention Paulson & Co at all. They claimed instead that ACA Management, an objective, independent third party with expertise in analyzing risk, had assembled the portfolio. They must have known that if they had admitted the involvement of Paulson & Co, investors might have viewed it entirely differently, given the reputation of hedge funds.

The Goldman Sachs “vice president” at the heart of the scandal is a Frenchman called Fabrice Tourre. In an email sent to a friend a month before he helped to structure the toxic portfolio, Tourre said, “More and more leverage in the system. The whole building is about to collapse anytime now … Only potential survivor, the fabulous Fabrice Tourre … standing in the middle of all these complex, highly leveraged, exotic trades he created without necessarily understanding all of the implication of those monstrosities!!!”

Tourre was described as a “well-mannered, handsome guy from a very refined family.” He had a reputation for throwing noisy parties in his fashionable block of flats. He was a ‘straight-A’ student at the Lycee Henri IV, one of France’s most elite schools, housed in an exquisite 6th Century abbey in Paris. He then studied mathematics at the Ecole Centrale Paris, a top French university, before completing his elite education with the obligatory trip to the USA where he obtained a master’s degree from Stanford. He worked in a luxurious office in a prime location in London.

Goldman Sachs FRAUD Charges Filed By SEC Over Subprime Mortgage Securities

Posted by Admin on April 21, 2010

Huffington Post

Goldman Sucks

Goldman Sucks

April 16, 2010

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/04/16/sec-goldman-sachs-charged_n_540377.html

The government has accused Goldman Sachs of defrauding investors by failing to disclose conflicts of interest in mortgage investments it sold as the housing market was faltering.

The Securities and Exchange Commission announced Friday civil fraud charges against the Wall Street powerhouse and one of its executives. The agency alleges Goldman failed to disclose that one of its clients helped create — and then bet against — subprime mortgage securities that Goldman sold to investors. In essence, Goldman is accused of pushing a mortgage investment that was secretly devised to fail.

Investors in the mortgage securities are alleged to have lost more than $1 billion, the SEC noted.

The SEC claims Goldman Sachs and one of its top officers misled investors by not disclosing that hedge fund manager John Paulson, who made billions betting against the housing market, selected the assets that went into a complex security called “Abacaus.”

Paulson & Co. is one of the world’s largest hedge funds, and paid Goldman roughly $15 million for structuring these deals in 2007.

“The simultaneous selling of securities to customers and shorting them because they believed they were going to default is the most cynical use of credit information that I have ever seen,” finance expert Sylvain R. Raynes told the New York Times about such deals. “When you buy protection against an event that you have a hand in causing, you are buying fire insurance on someone else’s house and then committing arson.”

Goldman Sachs shares fell more than 10 percent after the SEC announcement.

This Volcano Is About More Than Flights

Posted by Admin on April 20, 2010

While it is early in the morning in Europe the following picture shows the impact of the volcano in Iceland on European air traffic (as of Thursday), if you compare Northern (none) and Southern (60) European flights. The blue crosses are airports. The volcano has already had a stunning impact on Europe, although articles about it are already dropping below the lead headlines.

There is a thought that the plume may last another five days, and even though the cloud is largely invisible to those who are being impacted by it, the damage by neglecting these precautions could be severe. And given that the British election is on May 6th, the impact of a sustained eruption on the debates in the UK, and the result may go beyond just limiting the travel of those who would campaign, to become more dominant with the length of the flight curtailments and the responses to help resolve what are likely to be growing transportation problems.

Flight Map

The presence of sulphur dioxide is already obvious to local residents, though there don’t appear to be any concerns over its toxicity. This is the toxicity information given by gasdetection.com:

WITH ACUTE EXPOSURE, 5 PPM CAUSES DRYNESS OF NOSE & THROAT AND A MEASUREABLE INCR IN RESISTANCE TO BRONCHIAL AIR FLOW; 6 TO 8 PPM CAUSES A DECR IN TIDAL RESP VOLUME. SNEEZING, COUGH & EYE IRRITATION OCCUR AT 10 PPM; 20 PPM CAUSED BRONCHOSPASM; 50 PPM CAUSES EXTREME DISCOMFORT BUT NO INJURY IN LESS THAN A 30-MIN EXPOSURE … 1000 PPM CAUSES DEATH IN FROM 10 MIN TO SEVERAL HR BY RESP DEPRESSION.

The larger eruptions of Katla, have ejected up to 1.5 x 10^9 cu m of material with a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of up to 5. For comparison Mt Pinatubo in 1991 ejected 1.1 x 10^10 cu m with a VEI of 6.

The Times has an interesting graphic that shows some of the concerns and I am going to use a bit of it to show that the problem may be a little bigger than even the article suggests.

To begin with recognize that Iceland is at the intersection of different plates that together form the shell of the planet. Whereas in some parts of the world these plates are pushing together and riding over each other, in this part of the world they are tending more to separate, so that the magma, on which the plates ride, can make its way up along the joint planes and erupt at the surface.

Volcano Map

Map of Iceland showing major volcanoes (The Times of London)

Now what the picture is concerned about is that generally when Eyjaflallajokull erupts so does Kalta, which is right next door. But Katla is a larger system and the eruption is generally much more severe.

Unfortunately what has also to be considered is that there are a whole line of craters, not shown on this map, between Katla and Vatnajokull, which are also a worry. Laki, an even greater threat than Katla, lies along this line.

Iceland’s Laki volcano erupted in 1783, freeing gases that turned into smog. The smog floated across the Jet Stream, changing weather patterns. Many died from gas poisoning in the British Isles. Crop production fell in western Europe. Famine spread. . . . . . .

The winter of 1784 was also one of the longest and coldest on record in North America. New England reported a record stretch of below-zero temperatures and New Jersey reported record snow accumulation. The Mississippi River also reportedly froze in New Orleans.

It is at the orange flag in this picture.

Volcano Map

(Google Earth)

There is a line of eruption calderas from Katla up to Laki, which is up around Skaftareldar.
The 3.5 earthquake I wrote about on Bit Tooth Energy lies beyond Laki on the line from Eyjaflallajokull, and was centered further north in the Vatnajokull. Some have blamed the weather created by the eight-month eruption of Laki as a possible contributory cause to the French Revolution.

An eruption of that length, ejecting as much material as it may into the atmosphere, would have consequences that go beyond just the ability to survive the noxious gaseous clouds.

The impact of the dust is shown in this picture from the British Met Office, which shows that plume reaching down past Scotland:

Volcano Map

Dust cloud passing Scotland (Met Office)

And the consequent distribution at different levels of the atmosphere.

Volcano Map

High and low level ash distribution (Met Office via the Guardian)

The agriculture of Europe would be damaged by a prolonged eruption with this distribution, and with it the possible production of biodiesel. Consider that the growth of rapeseed (canola) around the world has been steadily rising over the past few years.

Rapeseed Production

With European countries sitting just behind the leaders.

Rapeseed Production

Somewhere over 4 million metric tons of the crop currently goes to producing biodiesel, mainly in Europe. (Heading up towards 100,000 bd). Losing a year of that crop (and large scale volcanic activity can have an impact for over four years on the climate and the ground chemistry), particularly given the current possible approach of the peaking of conventional oil production, could have an unanticipated impact on overall liquid fuel availability and price.

Unfortunately rapeseed is only one of the crops that will be affected, and the significant drop in crop yields does not appear to be getting much attention yet.

Beyond that, there should be a little concern for the wind turbines that are now dotted over the horizon. The concern is with the speed at which the tips travel through the air. The air, that looks clean, will contain small particles of very sharp glass and other volcanic ejecta, that are the primary cause for the grounding of aircraft across Europe. While the aircraft can see very sudden loss in engine power, because of the high speeds with which they encounter the clouds, and the volumes of debris sucked into engines that then fail. (There are also video explanations.)

Wind wing tip speeds have been projected to be in the range from 264 ft/sec to 326 ft/sec. At impact speeds over 120 ft/sec the particles from the eruption will start to erode the blades of the turbine. If the eruption continues for weeks, and the turbines rotate in that atmosphere (which looks clear to normal vision) then they will lose surface quality, and perhaps the particles will enter into the generators (as they do on aircraft) doing significant damage.

Thus, beyond the initial inconvenience of the loss of a way to fly (bearing in mind I am supposed to fly to Europe myself soon), there are the longer concerns over both the crops this summer and for the next four, and for the longer term health of the turbines. All in all it is a reminder that there is never a time that Nature, with a little nudge, cannot remind us of the risks of complacency.
