Justice Department urges appeals court to reinstate charges in Blackwater shootings in Iraq

There was more than enough untainted evidence to justify a trial for five Blackwater Worldwide guards involved in a deadly 2007 shooting in Baghdad, the Justice Department told a federal appeals court.In court papers seeking to reinstate criminal charges, the department asserted that some of the evidence tainted by immunized statements in the case was harmless and did not justify scuttling the manslaughter charges against the guards.

In December, a federal judge dismissed the case against the security guards, who had opened fire on a crowded Baghdad street. Seventeen people were killed, including women and children, in a shooting that inflamed anti-American sentiment in Iraq.

In the filing released Wednesday by the appeals court, the government said the judge who dismissed the charges lost sight of the key question of whether the defendants’ testimony given under a grant of immunity from prosecution was actually used against them.

U.S. District Judge Ricardo Urbina “unjustifiably drew the curtain on a meritorious prosecution,” Justice Department lawyers wrote.

Urbina ruled on Dec. 31 that the Justice Department mishandled evidence and violated the guards’ constitutional rights.

The Moyock, N.C.-based Blackwater, now called Xe Services, has said the guards were innocent, contending they were ambushed by insurgents. Prosecutors said the shooting was unprovoked.

EU Takes up the UFO Issue – Major Disclosure News

In a move that presses to have Ufo disclosure on an unprecedented scale  throughout the EU, an Italian Member of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, has submitted a request to the highest legislative body within the European Union for full disclosure of classified UFO documents by the 27 nation governments that belong to the EU! :

Below is an extract of his submission which you may read here:

Written declaration on the declassification of documentation on UFOs
The European Parliament,
–      having regard to Articles 4, 179, 180 and 189 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,
–      having regard to Rule 123 of its Rules of Procedure,
A.      whereas in 1978 the 33rd General Assembly of the United Nations formally recognised UFOs as a valid issue,
B.      whereas in 1993 a resolution drafted by the Italian physicist Tullio Regge and seeking to extend to European level the investigative remit of what was then the only government body looking into UFOs (the SEPRA, which has now become the GEIPAN) was tabled in Parliament,
C.      whereas many members of the scientific community have been looking into the issue of UFOs and have denounced the systematic covering-up of information on the subject,
D.      whereas a study of the material collected by the governments of all the Member States would have major scientific and technological spinoffs,
1.      Considers it essential to set up a scientific centre for the analysis and dissemination of the scientific data gathered to date by various European bodies and governments;
2.      Calls for public archives on UFOs to be opened up and for records to be declassified by the Member States, thus providing the public and the mass media with access to the full range of documentation on the subject;
3.      Instructs its President to forward this declaration, together with the names of the signatories, to the Council, the Commission and the governments of the Member States.

Indian Navy escorted 900 foreign ships in Gulf of Aden

New Delhi, June 18 (IANS) The Indian Navy Friday said it has so far safely escorted over 900 foreign ships in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden.

‘To date, the Indian Navy has escorted 1,037 ships, including 134 Indian flagged and 903 foreign flagged, across the pirate infested waters of the Gulf of Aden,’ navy spokesperson Commander P.V.S. Satish said.

The navy ‘successfully’ escorted the 1,000th ship when INS Brahmaputra recently accompanied MV Borzna, a cargo vessel, Satish said,

‘The Indian Navy’s contribution to keeping the ‘global commons’ safe for merchant ships of as many as 50 countries who have availed the escort is significant. This, of course, is in addition to the anti-piracy patrols the (navy) undertakes in other island countries of the region,’ he said.

The Indian Navy has conducted anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since October 2008 by continuously maintaining at least one ship to escort merchant vessel convoys across the Internationally Recommended Transit Corridor (IRTC) in the Gulf of Aden.

Recently INS Mysore took over as the 20th ship to undertake the anti-piracy mission in the Gulf of Aden.

The navy intends to continue maintaining a ship in the region to provide escort to merchant vessels sailing through the Gulf of Aden.
